We Got These Peacocks!

Hello always dreamed of pulling up in the driveway and being greeted by all types of animals.  Currently when she takes a walk around the farm she has two dogs, a cat and guinea fowl to accompany her.  It seems only natural being the pet lover that she is that she would have hopes of adding a peacock to the bunch.

Yoda the PeahenEnter Princess Yoda!  The peahen came first to the farm. Her age is unknown but she has a green neck and seems afraid.  She got her name simply from her first day at the farm.  She spent the morning making a honking sound.  The sound reminded Hello of a small truck coming down the road and honking the horn.  She decided that it sounded like a Toyota and however from that we ended up with the name.

Hello knew the male would be here soon as she was waiting for him to get old enough to leave his mother.  Hello had been to another farm where she seen a couple of peafowl.  The owners were kind enough to offer their male peacock to come live on our farm as two adult males would fight.

Echo as a baby hanging with his MomHis name is Echo as he has the same honk as Yoda but with a little bit more.  Echo was born white just like his Mother.  As he gets older he will change colors and be grand like his Father.  His tale is not so long now but when it is full grown he will be about 6 foot long from head to the tips of his tail.

Hello wanted the peafowl to free range on the farm.  This will allow them to roam around the farm without being confined to a pen.  She started by keeping them in a pen for about 2 months and feeding them treats.  One day she allowed them out of the pen and they walked around just a bit and returned.  The next day they flew off and up high in a large tree.  The next morning they were gone.  Hello was sad as she walked out to the barn for one last look.

When returning to the house something caught her eye.  It was Echo looking down at her from the top of the garage.  He was so glad to see her that he jumped down and ran to the barn to see if she had left a treat behind.  She promptly locked him in.  That evening he honked for Yoda.  You could hear her honk back from very far away.  It took her two days to make it back home.

Peacock and PeahenYoda and Echo have now reunited and are living in the barn.  The door stays open but the peafowl have made it the safe haven and don’t come out very often.  Echo got caught outside the barn one night when a large snow storm came up.  There wasn’t anything that Hello could do because he perched way up high in a tree.  She worried all night but sure enough the next morning you found Echo safe in the barn.

Hello put a mirror on the floor because most birds love to look and will not stray far from their mirror image. It works well as they tend to stay there much of the day. Echo is slowly changing color and you can see he has a short tail now. It will take about two years for Echo to look as wonderful as his Father.

Welcome to the farm Princess Yoda and Echo I am sure we are going to hear a lot about you guys.

Do Dogs and Cats Eat Sushi?

Sushi mat for making pet and human sushiCongratulations David!  You were the winner of our “What in Z world contest”.  Your guess was the tool for making sushi rolls.  Be sure to go to my Contact Us tab and send me your address so I can send you a prize.

Speaking of sushi rolls check this out!

Pussy & Pooch is an innovative and unique pet boutique that is located in downtown Los Angeles. They cater to the urban lifestyle of modern pets and their owners.

This boutique includes a great place for you to shop for clothes, accessories and includes a Pawbar. Yes, a place for your pets to pick up their own sushi rolls. Dozens of dogs stop by there daily to enjoy raw treats, sushi rolls and dog beer. Dog beer is malted chicken or beef flavored vitamin water.

The owners believe that pets should eat as nature intended them. Each meal includes animal protein with a small amount of plant products. The plants simulate what a carnivore would find in its prey’s stomach. You will not find grain and filler foods in this place. The boutique has had so much success that they now have opened another store in the Belmont Shore area of Long Beach.

S.A.D. (Species Appropriate Diet) Dog Sushi LLC is located in the Austin TX area. They also include the raw meat alternative to feeding your carnivorous pet. They have a huge assortment of rolls that are fresh, whole and made with 100% natural ingredients. So fresh that it is suitable for human consumption.

You can spend quite a bit of time looking through all the names for the sushi rolls they offer. Some of the names that stuck out for me were the “no begging beef roll” and the “dances with buffalo roll”. Their signature rolls, nigiri and sashimi offer more choices than the local supermarket. These include things like green tripe, beef sweetbreads and beef recreational bones.

Both sites claim that the benefits of feeding in the raw include better digestion, fresher breath, cleaner teeth and healthier coats. Going raw will also help pets that have food allergies and even controlling seizures. Check out these two sites and consider the raw advantages for your pets.

Doggie Workout!

Today I was pecking out the net and came across this video. I really don’t know what to say. If your New Year’s resolution was to get in better shape don’t forget your furry friend. This is a short workout and a great time to bond. Grab a chair and turn it up! It’s time for a workout!

Humans, Dogs and Boxes?

I want to squawk about something!  These humans are crazy!  They love boxes!  They look at big boxes and talk to little boxes.  My human (The one I hired to clean my cage and feed me) talks to a little box all the time.  It even calls out to her.  She will come running around the corner grabs it and says “Hello”.   It stops yelling out when she does this.  Sometimes it will call her and I think she is mad at it because she will pick it up and say….”I don’t think so”.

The crazy thing is the humans don’t talk to the big box.  The big box just talks to the humans and they sit there for hours just looking at it and listening.  Sometimes they watch the big box talk on the little box about what the big box is saying.  The other day all of the sudden they started yelling at the big box and that puzzled me.  They yelled “go, go, go”.  I found it very exciting but the box never moved!  The humans jumped up and down.  Some got mad and others laughed at the mad ones.  The box was never afraid it just sat there and talked and flashed its colors.

Gracie watching the Big Box!

I have a new problem now. I think the dogs are teaming up with the humans.  I have yet to see a dog talk to a little box but i have evidence that the dogs are now teaming up with the humans.  A reader shared this photo of Gracie watching and listening to a big box. Then the craziest thing happened … I started getting pictures where the dogs were dressing up like humans.

Here are two pictures from readers that have their team shirts on!

Here is Haley in her favorite team shirt!

Then you have Zeus…….aka Sir FURcrest!  Sorry Zeus your team lost but you still look great in that shirt.

I believe that we should do our best to watch out for the boxes in our lives.  Maybe humans should consider turning off the big box, putting down the little box, stop typing on the medium box.  Get your dog out of the closet and the two of you go for a walk…..Z Bird.

RD picked the Saints!!!

Here at the farm we felt for sure that it being a pet blog that the natural choice would be the Colts! We nominated RD as the official game forecaster for this year. With two tabs of paper the same size, color and smell he made his selection. The only difference in the two were the words Colts on one and the Saints on the other. RD has a trick that he already knows of guessing which hand the treat was in. You can shuffle it behind your back and he will actually pick the one with the treat. He gets it right about 95% of the time. Today we put the treat in both hands for equal smell and allowed him to see the names. RD selected the Saints to win the Superbowl. Goooooooo Saints! Have a great Superbowl Day!

Dogs in the Cold Weather

Black LabThey are calling for some more bad weather here at the farm.  The issue came up because R.D. (our elderly canine) was shaking.  Was it arthritis setting in his pelvis he had broken when he was young?  Was he in pain? Had he heard something and was afraid or was he just chilled to the bone?   I jumped right on the Internet and went to pecking away.  These are some facts that I learned about how to protect our K-9s in the cold weather and snow.

Provide Good Shelter

If you have to keep your dog outside be sure to give them a dry place to sleep.  Provide them with a blankets or straw to keep them off cold hard surfaces.  Be sure to check blankets for dampness as dogs tend to not dry off before getting in bed.  Don’t depend on a light bulb or any kind of space heaters because they are a huge fire hazard.  There are heated dog pads that work well and have been tested for safety.   Don’t leave your K-9 in the garage or car while you heat it up.  Carbon monoxide is a killer.

Keep A Check On Food And Water

Just because your dog loves licking at the snow don’t assume that he is getting enough water.  Dogs need to be well hydrated and bellies full when the weather is cold.  Be sure to check water bowls often from being frozen.  Many humans think of topping off their radiators with anti-freeze during these times and may spill or leave containers sitting around.  Anti-freeze is like sugar water to dogs and it only takes a couple of licks to make them very sick or die. Another helpful tip is to keep a gallon of fresh water in storage in case you have a power outage and they can’t get you back online right away.

Ice and Snow

It many be funny to see the puzzled look on the face of our unsuspecting K-9

as they slide across the ice on a ground that they have traveled many times before.   Be sure to think about how you would feel if you took that hard fall.  Dogs don’t understand what is going on and the dangers that can exist.  You wouldn’t let a child go barreling out the door so use the same caution with your pets.  Bad falls can cause injuries and the bad weather conditions may hinder you from getting your pet good medical attention.

Another concern is when your dog is having the time of his life playing in the snow.  You may not realize that snow balls are building up between their toes.  These can become painful and yes pets can get frost bite.  Beware of your dog stopping to bite at their feet.  This could be a sign that they are getting a build up of snow or ice balls.  If your dog is going to be playing in the snow you can apply a small amount of cooking oil or Pam on their paws and between their toes to protect them.  Make sure you use something that they can digest as you know they like to lick their paws.

Pet Outerwear

Older dogs, puppies and short haired dogs have a very hard time getting warm in the cold weather. If your dog is going to be spending an extended time out in the cold get them a sweater or dog coat. These should only be used under supervision because they could get the clothing caught on something causing them injury or death. There are many stores that carry great outerwear for pets.

If the forecasters are predicting the temperatures to drop below freezing be sure to think of your pets and protect them. It’s your job as a pet owner!

Happy Groundhog Day!

Smokey and Z Bird

Smokey wanting me to come outside and discuss the Groundhog Day events!

The saying goes that if  Punxsutawaney Phil (a groundhog) sees his shadow on this day then we will have six more weeks of winter.  Something is bugging me about this whole thing.  I read today that he has seen his shadow 99 times, 15 times no shadow and 9 times no record.  This dude is OLD!  He would be like 123.  That’s not his shadow he saw…. that was death chasing him! The oldest reported wild groundhog lived a whopping 6 and a half years.  I don’t know about this Phil guy.

Have you ever heard the story about how the goldfish died and the parents just swapped it for a look-a-like?  I think we need to keep an eye on that group there in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

I also read Phil actaully lives in the Punxsutawney Library in a climate-controlled home.  He thrives on a buffet of dog food and ice cream.  Sometime before Feb 2nd Phil is “placed” in a heated burrow underneath a tree stump that is on a stage located at Gobbler’s Knob.  Phil is pulled out somewhere between 7:20 and 7:30 am in front of a many as 35,000 people.  This whole event wasn’t that popular until Bill Murray starred in a film back in 1993 named Groundhog Day.

Now it seems several states are jumping on the event and bringing out their best groundhog.   Ohio has Buckeye Chuck whom did not see his shadow and Staten Island Chuck also reported no shadow.  Texas couldn’t produce a groundhog so they settled for an armadillo named Bee Cave Bob.  This is the first time Texas has depended on Bob’s prediction but they do claim that he has been right 98.6 percent of the time.  If  this is his first time  Bee Cave Bob weighed in how do we get these numbers?

Here at the farm I nominate me (Z Bird) as the official weather forecaster extraordinaire.  I am always 100 percent correct and I say it’s going to be a long winter!!!!!

Be sure to subscribe to my post as I will be forcasting who will win the  Superbowl XLIV.
